What is the point of a display case that's open to the public?
While the artifact is open for guests to interact with, the display case still prevents theft. The small piece of Mars is set into a large block of resin which is also also adhered to the base of the display case. If not for the display case, the Mars piece could be dislodged with some effort and tools. The display case doesn't allow enough room for dexterity to use any sort of tool for potential theft. In the unlikely event that the resin block became detached, the laser cut openings on the side are not large enough to allow it to slide out.
